Handwritten word across a wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a single word written in black, hand-drawn lettering across a pale wrist. The lowercase letters have thin, slightly uneven strokes and sit along a gentle curve. The ink is solid black with no shading, and the plain dark background keeps the focus on the text.

Dear Tom, the kettle's on and Mam says you're to stop writing on yourself like a schoolboy. I saw it Saturday when you came up the bank, your sleeve shoved back and the ink gone blue where the pit water had worked into it. You told me it was for remembering the roof bolt numbers, and I said you could remember numbers fine without drawing them on your arm.

Dad's pigeons are doing badly. The lads at the Welfare reckon the new loft is damp, and Mrs Pryce has taken to hanging her washing out in the rain just to spite the council. The colliery band practised in the chapel hall on Tuesday, and the trombone still sounds like a goose being sat on. Nothing else worth the paper.
Mam wants it scrubbed off before you come home for your tea, and I said I'd tell you so. But I'll be honest, I stood at the back step last night and looked at it in the light from the yard lamp. Your wrist was still wet from the wash, and the letters had gone soft at the edges, like they'd been drawn by someone who was tired. It looked like the handwriting on the lunch-tin label Dad made you copy out when you first went down.
So don't scrub too hard. Leave the last of it on, if there's any left. I'll know where you are by it, and you'll know where I am, and that's the lot. Mind the cage on the way up. Love, Nan's old scarf is in the drawer if you want it, and Mam says to bring your boots to the back door so she can dry them. Your sister, Jean.
