Outlined hearts on both feet

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

The photo shows two feet in flat shoes, each with a small outlined heart tattoo formed of two overlapping hearts. The left heart sits near the ankle and the right one sits on the top of the foot near the toes. The thin, even black linework is set against bare skin on a grey carpet, and the greyscale photo shows no colour.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Peder Ashworth was the only cobbler left in Hollin Dale once the mill closed, and the year his daughter Nell was to marry the carter's boy, she asked him for a pair of shoes nobody in the valley had asked for before. She wanted them flat and soft as gloves, with no heel to lift her above the cobbles, because she meant to walk the whole lane to the chapel and back without stopping.

He cut the uppers from grey kid and worked through the winter by a single lamp. When the soles were stitched he took a fine awl and pricked a heart into the lining of each toe, then drew a second heart through the first so the two shared one edge. His wife asked why he didn't make two plain hearts. He said a plain heart stands by itself, and a pair of shoes that walks a long way ought to carry something that doesn't.

On the wedding morning Nell pulled the shoes on in the porch. The hearts sat where the lining met the leather, one near the ankle and one across the top of the foot, and the carter's boy knelt to check the fit and went very still. He had seen that same double heart cut into the old oak bench where his grandmother used to sit, a bench older than the chapel roof, and he had never once asked who made it.

Nell walked the lane that afternoon without stopping, and the dust took the print of every step. By dusk the road was grey again, but Peder noticed that the two hearts had left their own small marks beside her path, one stitched inside the other, and he left them there for the rain.
