I have been knotting the friendship bands at the back table, four strands pulled tight over the bent nail you left behind. The children want their names worked in, so I hand them a biro and let them spell it out on a card. Last month a girl sat where you used to sit and asked for one word only, happiness, written down the length of her wrist for me to copy. She wanted it slanted, like the mainsail on the Mary Ann when she heels into the wind, and she wanted no colour in it at all.

I told her I could not promise it would look how she pictured. Some words sit better in thread than in ink. She said that was fine, she only wanted to carry it somewhere the sea could not wash off her. Then she paid in coins that smelled of the harbour and walked off towards the pier with her new bands stacked to the elbow, clinking like a boat at anchor.

So I have started one for myself. I am using the purple, the one you said looked bruised, and I have worked the word in with a tiny gold bead at each end. It is crooked. I am leaving it crooked. Come home before the autumn boats go out, and bring the good scissors.
