Metallic arrow and chevron temporary tattoos on hands
Geometric · Hand · Colour · Photo
Two hands are shown with metallic temporary tattoos: a silver chevron on the left hand and a silver arrow on the right, each decorated with small gold dots. The linework is clean and solid, with no shading, and the metallic silver and gold stand out against the skin. The hands are shown close up against a sandy, leafy background, with stacked beaded bracelets and rings in the frame.

The path past Cold Hollow mill had been under water since March, and nobody from Ashcombe would walk it without a guide. So Edith Marsh took a tin of silver paint, a brush cut from a badger's tail, and a pocketful of gold leaf, and she marked the trees herself. Chevrons first, two sharp strokes on every trunk, pointing the way home. Her brother Tom called it wasteful. He said the village had a perfectly good map pinned in the church porch, and the map had never once been wrong about the flood.

She painted the arrows at the crossroads where the ground turned to moss, and she dabbed gold dots along the stepping stones so the eye would have something to follow when the light went. Her grandmother had taught her that a path is only a promise people keep, and promises need small reminders. The dots caught the sun in the mornings and went dull by noon, but they always caught it again the next day.
In October the lamp failed at the mill and a boy named Wat did not come home. Edith went out at dusk with a storm lantern she didn't need. The moon had risen behind the beeches and every chevron she had painted lit up like a row of drawn breaths along the trunks. She followed them past the sunken weir, past the place the road had gone, until she heard him crying under a fallen beech with his ankle bent the wrong way.
When they got him back, Tom stood in the lane and counted the silver marks on the nearest tree without saying a word. In the morning Edith went out again with the tin. She painted one last arrow on the gatepost of the mill, pointing back toward the wood, so whoever came looking next would know which way to turn.
