FRIENDS lettering across fingers
Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands are clasped together, with the word FRIENDS in small black capital letters tattooed across the fingers of the visible hand. The lettering is simple and evenly spaced, in black ink against the skin. The photograph shows the hands and bracelets against a leafy background, with two people in lace and denim shorts standing side by side.

Nobody in Hallow Grange ever climbed the east tower except us, and only because the stair had fallen in on the far side, so you went up the ivy instead. Mara went first, always, her bare feet finding the old mortar gaps as if they'd been left there for her. I followed with my trainers slipping and my palms full of green sap.

The castle belonged to the council now, which meant a sign by the gate and a padlock nobody had bothered to fix since 1987. Inside, the great hall was a square of sky with a fig tree growing out of the hearth. We kept a biscuit tin up there under a loose slab, full of things we were too young to say out loud: a bus ticket to Carlisle, a pressed buttercup, a note that said I will still be your friend when we are forty, signed in two colours of biro.
The summer her mum moved them to Leeds, Mara didn't cry. She sat on the parapet, took my hand, turned it over and wrote on my fingers in marker, one letter to each knuckle, pressing hard so it would last. F-R-I-E-N-D-S. Then she made me do hers. Mine smudged before I got home, and I scrubbed at the rest with a flannel until my nan asked what on earth I'd been doing.
Last month I went up alone. The ivy had taken the tower's west face entirely. In the tin, beneath the buttercup, was a second note in her handwriting, dated the week we'd sworn, and it said only: Now you have to keep the letters going. So I've got the marker out again, and this time I'm not washing them off.
