Small rabbit tattoo on skin
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A small rabbit facing right is drawn in thin black linework, with a pair of upright ears and a short tail. The image shows light shading in places and the tattoo is set on pale skin against a softly blurred outdoor background. The composition is tight, with the design small and centred in the frame.

Sol Tanner had the fiddle that night, and he played for his own pleasure, the pennies being a courtesy. He saw the animal sitting by the bass drum with its ears up like two folded letters. It was no big hare. It was a small thing, drawn fine as pencil, the sort you'd only glimpse at the edge of a hedge at dusk. Sol winked at it and struck up a reel.
Ada Pell, eighty-one years old and the only one in the room who had danced with a man who went to France and came back, rose from her chair with her stick in one hand. She said the hare was showing them the step. So they all followed it, the hare hopping sideways, turning once on its hind legs, while Sol played faster and faster until the windows ran with sweat and the clock above the stage stopped at a quarter past eleven.
At first light the hall was empty but for the chairs. Someone swept up the crushed paper cups and found a single line of little prints across the frost on the step, going away towards the hedge. Ada said that was the proper end to any dance, to leave the floor with something still moving on it. Sol said that was nonsense and went home to bed.
