Script quote with Deathly Hallows symbol
Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows the script phrase After all this time above a Deathly Hallows symbol, a triangle enclosing a circle with a vertical line through it, followed by the script word always. Below the symbol is the number 687 between asterisks. The work is in solid black linework with no shading, photographed in black and white on skin at the side of the torso.

The rings were in my left trouser pocket when the vicar held out his hand, and for one awful second I couldn't feel them through the lining. Dad had told me to keep them away from the bouquet, the cake and anyone who wanted to hold them for a photo. So they rode in my pocket beside the old grey pebble with a hole worn clean through its middle, the one Nana had threaded on a bootlace before anyone in our family owned a car.

Nana always said the pebble was the only thing she ever kept for herself. The bootlace was her second idea, the first being a ring she'd sold to pay the coal man. Three things came to Mum in the will: the pebble, a tin of Victorian buttons and a bus timetable from 1971 with route 687 circled in biro. Nobody could say why the number mattered, only that she'd tapped it every time she passed a bus stop.
The bride's sister found me hunting under the pew. I fished out the rings and the pebble came with them, bouncing off the flagstones and rolling in a long, unhurried curve towards the font. Everybody turned. The groom laughed first, then the bride, who was reading her vows from a card gone soft at the corners. She'd written after all this time, and then she'd stopped and looked at him and said the rest without the card.
I picked up the pebble, wiped it on my shirt and set it on the register table beside the pen. Nobody asked me to explain it, which was just as well, because I couldn't have managed the word that came next.
