Other · Mixed · Photo
Two wrists are shown side by side, each with a Hello Kitty design drawn in a bold black outline. The left wrist also has a red bow near the top of the head, while the right wrist's design is outline only. The photograph is a close, slightly warm-toned snapshot with a grey fabric and sleeve in the background.

The parcel came up the lane on a Tuesday, wrapped in brown paper and tied with string knotted by someone who did not trust knots. It was addressed to two people, both at Hollin Cottage, Thornfield Edge, which as far as anyone in the village knew was one cottage, one letterbox and one very tired woman who answered to Miss Hadley.

I held it up to the window of the post office, which is my front room since the Co-op shut, and shook it. Inside were two cardboard cats cut from the same template, each painted with a black outline and one with a fat red bow stuck on its left ear in poster paint. A note in capitals said: KEEP THE BOW ONE FOR WHEN YOU ARE BRAVE. KEEP THE PLAIN ONE FOR WHEN YOU ARE NOT. DO NOT LOSE EITHER. THE WOOD IS FULL OF FOXES WHO COLLECT RIBBON.
I do not believe in foxes who collect ribbon, but I walked the footpath anyway with both cats in my coat pocket, past the stile and the holly, until I reached the oak with the chalk arrow on it. Ewan Pell was sitting under it on a camping stool, the signalman who retired the year the railway stopped stopping here. He had a tin of boiled sweets and a face like a closed gate.
"You're late," he said, and held out a cat of his own. It was plain. I took out mine and set both on the stile, bows facing the same way, and we looked at them for a long time without saying anything useful. Then he unwrapped a sweet, offered me one, and said the foxes had probably only wanted the string.
In the morning I found the plain cat on my doormat with a small red bow stuck to its ear, and a note underneath that read: YOU WERE BRAVER THAN YOU THOUGHT.
