Infinity symbol with birds and faith
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A black infinity symbol curves across the skin, with three small birds in flight on its upper left loop. The word faith is written in cursive script that runs through the right loop of the symbol. The tattoo is in black ink with uniform, thin linework, and it is shown against warm, softly lit skin with a patterned fabric edge at the bottom of the frame.

Her grandson Owen had painted the word on the loft door the summer he turned eleven, copying the letters off a tin of boot blacking with his tongue between his teeth. Faith, he'd said, because that was what you needed when you let go of something. She had told him it was the birds who needed faith, not the people, and he had argued until his tea went cold. The van came back at dusk with the basket empty. Alf lifted it down and said nothing, and Hettie understood that the nothing was the news. She walked the length of the loft shelf, touching each perch as if counting beads, and at the far end a grey hen clattered in through the flap, circled once above the water trough, and dropped onto her wrist as though it had only stepped out for bread.
Hettie laughed, which surprised them both, and the other two followed in over the slates, one, then another, banking round the chimney in a long loop that closed on itself. She watched them go round and round the same sky until the light gave out, and she did not once look away to check the door.
