Heart and Love script on fingers
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A hand with two fingers held up, showing a small outlined heart on the upper segment of one finger and the word Love in black cursive script on the finger beside it. The linework is thin and even, and the ink is solid black with no shading or colour. The hand fills the frame against a dark pavement background, with pink painted nails visible.

She laid a scrap of papyrus on the board and tapped the space she meant. Tertius dipped his reed and waited. At last she admitted the word was for the lid of a small box, where she meant to keep her husband's hair clippings, and that she could not spell it herself, so he would have to choose the letters.
He wrote amor in his tidiest hand, then studied the spacing and thought of the cheap brass rings the stallholders sold to boys. Beside the word he added a small curl, the shape of a folded leaf, the mark his own teacher had called a little heart for children who could not yet make a proper one. She turned the scrap over, read it with her lips moving, and laughed once, sharply, the way people laugh when they have been holding a breath. She paid him two asses and left without asking for a receipt.
That evening he found the practice tablet in his satchel, and in its corner, without meaning to, he had scratched the same curl twice, as if the reed had remembered something his hand had not.
