Heart and ribbon behind the ear
Fine line · Other · Mixed · Photo
A small tattoo of an open black outline heart with a red ribbon-like loop and tail crossing its lower right side. The black line is thin and even, while the red ink is a slightly softer fine line with a looser loop. The image is a close, slightly angled shot against skin, with an ear piercing and stray hair visible at the edges.

Marnie had brought the old notes in a Quality Street tin because nobody else would remember the code. Thirty years of folded paper, each one sealed with a biro heart whose top was left open so the other person could finish it. At the Ashgrove Year Eleven reunion, in the function room above the Co-op, she set the tin on the raffle table between a plate of sausage rolls and a bowl of Jaffa Cakes.

Dev found her there at half eight. He was heavier than she remembered and kinder about it, and he still had the red felt-tip in his jacket pocket, the one they had shared for the notes. "You kept them," he said. "Nobody keeps anything." She opened the tin and took out the one from the spring before their GCSEs. It said only: meet me by the bins. The loop of ribbon at the bottom had been his idea, so that any teacher glancing over the register would think it was decoration.
They read the rest together, arguing about who had drawn which bit. Some were rude, some were about Mr Pryce's toupee, and one was a list of every boy they had agreed was tolerable. Dev laughed until he had to sit on a plastic chair. Then he stopped and said the ribbon had always been the hard part. The tail had to cross the heart without breaking the line, and he had never once managed it cleanly.
Marnie uncapped the red pen and drew a fresh one on the back of a napkin. The loop came out looser than it used to. She handed it over. "Still crosses," she said. "Still holds." He folded it into his wallet, behind a photo of a dog she did not ask about, and they went down the stairs to find the car park before the DJ started on the old songs.
