Heart, crown and sea witch on upper arm
Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A red heart wearing a gold crown sits at the centre of a yellow and orange starburst on the upper arm. Beside it, a cartoon sea witch with green skin and purple octopus-like tentacles is shaded in bold outlines, set against a dark smoky background with green and blue accents. The bright, solid colour dominates the composition, with the soft grey shading giving depth to the background.

The tide had been out since dawn, and Nell Tramper was down on the shingle at Gull Reach with an empty bucket and a grudge. The witch who lived under the breakwater had promised her a crown in exchange for the heart she'd left in the rockpool, and the promise had gone rotten like everything else in that cove.

Mother Culm came up through the weed on her purple tentacles, bruise-coloured and slick, grinning with a mouth full of mussel shells. She held out a crown of gold leaf and sea glass. "Wear it and no man will ever leave you," she said. "Wear it and you'll be the sun at the centre of everything."
Nell took it. The light came off the wet sand in a starburst of yellow and orange, and for one afternoon she was impossible to look away from. Then the crown grew heavy, the heart beneath it was pressed flat, and she understood the bargain had been the witch's all along.
So she sold the crown back to the tide for a penny and walked home bareheaded, her heart rattling like a stone in a tin. The witch never came for the penny. That night the gulls fought over it on the breakwater, and the sea took its gold back one wave at a time.
