Small solid heart on a finger

Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two hands are pressed together with the fingers curved to form a heart shape against a dark background. A small, solid black heart tattoo sits on the side of one finger, with clean edges and no shading. The warm, slightly grainy photograph is framed tightly on the hands, with a dark ring on one finger and a thin white object held between the fingertips at the centre.

Dear Nell, the Bramleys came into fruit a fortnight early, so Dad has us up ladders from six. I'm writing on the back of a seed invoice because the kitchen table is buried under crates. I've been tying the young whips with strips torn from an old white bedsheet, since the baler twine rubs the bark raw. Every knot looks like a small bandage, and Dad pretends not to notice.

Your ring turned up in the long grass under the Discovery tree while I was gathering windfalls. I wiped it on my jumper and hung it on the nail by the back door, where you'll trip over it at Christmas. Dad hasn't mentioned it. Each evening he walks to the gate and counts the rows with one finger, touching the air as if he's blessing each tree, and when he reaches the far hedge he stops and starts again from the beginning.

Tomasz came over on Sunday with his boy to help with the press. The lad found a stub of charcoal in the cellar and drew a little black heart on the side of the old oak barrel, no bigger than a thumbprint, then asked whether it counted as the cider's. Nobody answered him. Dad had his back to us and his hands full of pulp, so I told him yes.

The rain has been at it since Tuesday, but the heart is still there, sharp at the edges, and I don't think I'll be the one to scrub it off. Come home when you can. Bring the ring back, or don't. The trees will keep either way.
