Black and grey flash design of an anchor with a heart above a hatched rope infinity symbol, with the words faith and hope and two scripture references.

Heart, infinity rope and anchor design with hope and faith

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

The drawing shows an anchor formed from a black vertical shaft with the word faith running down it, the word hope along the left arm, and the references Heb 6:19 and 1 Cor 13:13 along the right arm. A bold heart outline sits above a rope-textured infinity symbol that crosses the top of the shaft. The design uses clean black linework on a plain white background with no shading or colour.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Oda the rope-maker of Hallin Reach had one rule for the apprentices who came to her shed: never cut a line you had not first tied off with your own hands. The harbour of Hallin was shallow and greedy, and the old men said it had swallowed more anchors than the sea had hulls. Each winter the town spun a new cable for the great stone anchor at the mouth of the bay, and each winter the old one was hauled up, grey and frayed, and hung in the chapel like a relic.

The autumn the chandler's boy, Tobin, came to her, he asked why the cable had to be one length. 'Because a rope with an end is a rope that can be let go of,' she said. She showed him how she worked the strands in a figure that folded back on itself, twisting two loops until they crossed at the middle and became one. Tobin laughed and said it looked like a lie a child would tell. She told him to go and find where it began.

He spent a week with it and found no beginning. In the spring a squall came in off the Narrows and tore three boats from their moorings. The fishermen brought the chapel's old cable down to the water and bent it to the great anchor, and it held, though it was thin in places and the salt had gone into its heart. Tobin stood on the quay with his palms raw from the work and watched the rope go taut against the swell.

When the new cable came off the walk that year, Oda tied its first knot to the old one and did not look at the join. Tobin asked her why. 'Because it holds,' she said, and went back to her spindle.
