Heart outline with two handprints
Black and grey · Flash
A bold black drawing of an open heart outline, with a thick brushstroke on the left and a thinner line along the right and bottom. Two handprints sit inside the heart, each with a small heart-shaped gap in the palm. The design is solid black on white with no shading or colour.

Every autumn, before the Vellan road closed under snow, the drovers' families left their hands on the hut wall. My grandmother's palm was there, faded to a brown ghost near the hearth, and beside it a row of prints belonging to people who had gone over the col and never come back to claim them. Nobody made a speech about it. You pressed, you scratched a heart, and you pulled your hand away before the lime set and took the skin of your fingers with it.
The boy pressed his hand beside hers, smaller and quicker, then wanted to go again when the first came out smeared. So the wall got a second try, and a heart inside a heart, and I let him have it. Tomas stood in the doorway counting the cart wheels and calling the time. We propped the door with a stone and banked the stove low. From the bend of the path I could still see the grey patch, already darkening where the rain would find it, two hands pale against the stone like something not yet finished.
