Heart, semicolon and heartbeat line on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows an outlined heart with a semicolon inside its upper right area, joined to a heartbeat trace that runs to the right across the forearm. The linework is thin and even in solid black ink, with no shading. The arm fills most of the frame against a soft floral fabric background.

Nell Harrow climbed the broken stair of Kellow Keep with a cold chisel in her apron pocket, because the mason had died in March and the lintel above the chapel door still ended mid-thought. Someone had cut "Here the bell was hung and the mass was sung" and then stopped, the last letter dragged where his mallet had slipped. The village wanted a full stop. The vicar wanted the stone left alone. Nell wanted neither, and she had the chisel.

The wind came off the North Sea through the arrow slits and tugged her hair loose as she knelt on the rubble. Below, the tide worked at the causeway in the same slow rhythm her father used to tap on the signal drum at the harbour, one beat, a longer pause, then another beat, as if the sea were checking whether the town still had a pulse. She had counted those beats through a bad winter when the boats stayed in.

She had thought about the full stop for weeks. A full stop closed a thing, and the keep had been closed for two hundred years already, roof gone, bell long melted down for shot. What the sentence needed was a pause that admitted more was coming. Nell set the chisel at the foot of the broken letter, struck once, twice, and cut a small dot with a curled tail beneath it.

When she stood back, the lintel read differently. The sea kept on below. She went down the stair in the dark, counting the steps, and did not look back at the stone.
