Heartbeat line and heart on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A black heartbeat trace runs across the side of a finger and finishes in a small outlined heart. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink is solid black against the skin. The hand rests on a grey fabric surface, with a blurred white and purple top in the background.

The paper came off the machine in a long grey tongue, and Maren Okafor caught the end before it curled onto the floor. Nobody on the ward would have called it a good trace. Bed four had been flat for an hour, then jumped, then settled into the same stubborn rhythm it had kept since the night shift started, a line that climbed and dropped like a dog's tail at a gate.

Stanley Pryce, who had minded the machines on this floor since before Maren was born, took the strip from her and ran his thumb along it. "Look at that," he said. "Stubborn as a Blackpool landlady." He pointed to the last few centimetres, where the stylus had wandered, looped, and closed into a small outlined heart. "Happens when the paper runs slow and the pen gets bored. Thirty years on this corridor and I've never seen it do it twice."

Maren carried the strip to bed four, where Edwin Coyle, a retired ferryman with a voice like gravel in a bucket, was pretending to be asleep. She laid it on the blanket beside his folded hands. He read it without his glasses, squinting, then laughed a low, wheezing laugh that made the monitor beep in protest. "Cheeky," he said. "Tell your machine it's been a long while since anyone drew me one of those."

She kept the strip folded in the pocket of her tunic for the rest of the shift. Whenever she reached for a pen at the desk, her fingers found the little heart first.
