Green ribbon and dot tattoo on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A close photograph of the inside of a wrist showing a small tattoo of a green awareness ribbon with a single dot above it. The tattoo is drawn in thin, even green linework with no visible shading, and the ribbon's loops sit slightly to the left of the dot. A bright green woven rubber band bracelet sits above the tattoo, and the plain skin background keeps the focus on the design.

The ribbon was still damp when you found it, knotted round the iron ring of the postern gate at Carrow Keep, bright as new grass. The trust stopped paying for the north stair two winters ago, so nobody climbs to the gatehouse any more except you, clearing moss from the arrow slits with a wire brush and a flask of tea. Beneath the ribbon, pressed into the soft lime mortar, was a single pencil dot, as if someone had started a word and lost the nerve to finish it.

You ask Mrs Heald in the village shop. She says the green is for the long waits, the ones where nobody can tell you how things will turn out. She says the Thursday walkers sometimes come up in summer and leave their colours on the gate, and that it is no business of the trust's what people tie to a ruin. You nod and buy a loaf you do not need.
That evening you go down to the old steward's room, where the visitors' ledger sits under a cracked pane of glass. Its entries run back two hundred years: names in brown ink, dates, weather notes in a clerk's careful hand. Beside many of them is a small dot, the same size as the one in the mortar. You turn the pages slowly until you understand that the dots were never counts of visitors. They mark the ones who climbed up to sit alone with something heavy, and then came down again.
In the morning you take a length of red wool from your coat pocket, tie it beside the green, and press a pencil dot into the mortar above both. Then you leave the ledger open on the steward's desk, at a clean page, in case anyone else needs somewhere to write.
