Tonight Dev took the Eastgate run without asking, which left me the long crawl over Ferrier Bridge with a sealed carrier and a radio that only plays the shipping forecast. I was cursing him the whole way, right up until the lights along the Royal Mill went blue and then green on the wet river, the way they do when the council changes the bulbs in the rain.

The carrier had to reach the ward on the fourth floor by two. I took the service lift because the front one was out, and a night porter called Tomasz walked me down the corridor like he was escorting a bishop. He signed for it with a biro that had run dry, so he licked the tip and wrote with it anyway. I laughed so hard I nearly dropped the thing.

Here is the part you will not believe. On the way back, a girl was sitting on the kerb outside the bus shelter with a lime-green scarf wrapped twice around her wrist, crying into a grey tram ticket. Dev had come back for me, parked crooked in the bus lane with the engine running. We swapped without a word. He drove her home, I took the van back to the depot, and somewhere between the two of us the city stitched itself together a little tighter than it had been at dusk.

I am writing this on the depot step with my boots off. Tell Mum the parcel arrived. Tell her I am not as tired as I sound.
