Heartbeat line across two wrists
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two wrists are pressed together, and a single continuous black line runs across both, shaped like a heartbeat trace with sharp peaks and a flat stretch. The linework is solid and even, with no shading or fill. The ink is black on pale skin against a light, soft-focus background, and the composition is close and centred on the join between the wrists.

Dear Tom,

The 7.14 pulled out this morning with nobody on the platform but me and the porter's dog, and I stood there until the rails stopped humming. You'll laugh, but I counted the wheels. Forty-one carriages, the way you always said there were never enough for anyone who wanted to leave. I still have the chalk stub you left on the signal box sill, the one you used to draw the trace on the board: a jagged line that climbed when a goods train came through and lay flat when nothing did.
Mrs Pryce at the lost property office says I am to stop writing on the timetables. She says a station is not a diary. I told her a station is nothing but a diary that somebody else keeps, and she gave me the look she saves for Thursdays.
So I did something foolish on my half day. I went to the tattooist above the chemist in Crewe and asked him for the line itself, not a heart or an anchor, just the trace from the signal board, inked across my wrist. He asked whose line it was. I said it was ours, and he didn't ask again. It's scabbing now, the way he warned me it would, and it itches like the devil under the bandage.
I've pressed my wrist to this page so you can see where the peaks fall. Lay yours over the top when you read it and the two will meet at the join. The flat stretch is the bit I can't bear. It only means the train hasn't come yet. Come home along the line, Tom. I'll keep the lamp lit at the junction.
