Heartbeat line and faith script
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A fine black linework tattoo shows a heartbeat trace that turns into an outlined heart on the left and runs into the cursive word faith on the right. The lines are thin and even, with solid black ink and no shading or colour. The design sits across the centre of the frame on smooth skin, with fingers visible at the top edge.

Sit yourself down on that step, and mind the damp, it gets into a man's bones quicker than the gossip does. You want the tale of the tide gauge at the end of the mole, do you? Well, it was a brass drum with a pen that drew the sea across a roll of paper, a long wavering line day after day, and every night Mabel Penhale changed the roll with thumbs so stiff from the cold she could barely feel the paper.

The winter the Mary Ann went down off the Cradle, the line began to jump. Little peaks came up out of the flat water like a pulse under the skin, one, then two, then a whole row of them, and Mabel sat with her lamp and her tea gone cold and watched that pen scratch out the sea's heartbeat while the lifeboat was still somewhere out in the dark. Nobody came to the gauge for answers. They came for the paper, and the paper was the only thing in the town that told the truth without being asked.
The widow, Ruth Calloway, came down every morning for a week. She never said a word about the boat. She just ran her finger along the peaks, slowly, the way you'd count a child's breaths in a fever, and then she asked Mabel whether the sea still had a pulse. Mabel said yes, because it did, and because the pen had not stopped.
On the last morning Ruth took a pencil from her coat and wrote a word beneath the jagged line, in a hand as neat as stitching. Then she folded the roll into her bag and went home. Mabel kept that strip of paper in the drawer of her desk for thirty years, and when she died they found it there, the peaks running off into a small, careful heart, and beside the heart, one word: faith.
