Infinity symbol with script word on the upper chest
Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A single black infinity symbol joins a handwritten script word on the upper chest, shown close up on fair skin with some freckles. The linework is thin and even, with the loop and script drawn in one continuous flowing stroke. The ink is solid black on a plain, softly lit background of skin and a red top.

Ada Pryce has been lettering pub boards in Mablethorpe for forty years, and on the morning of the wedding she is still arguing with the lid of her gold leaf tin. You are the one holding the board steady for her, because her wrist has started to shake and she will not admit it. "One stroke," she says. "Lift once and the loop goes wrong. Everything worth doing is one stroke."

The couple want the word from the old lamp on the breakwater, the one their fathers lit every evening before the council swapped it for an electric one. Ada wants to paint it without lifting the brush, so the loop of the infinity and the word run into each other like a current. You dip, you wipe, you watch her breathe in before the first curve. The pine smells of turpentine, and the gulls are squabbling on the roof of the bar below.
Halfway through the second letter her hand drifts and the curl sits too low. You expect her to swear. Instead she laughs and says the lamp never stood straight either, that it leaned a little toward the harbour every winter, and she lets the stroke bend where it wants to. You step back and the mistake reads like a wave coming in.
When the couple arrive at noon they look at the board for a long time and say nothing, which is how you know it is right. Ada wipes her hands on her apron and tells you a line never ends where you think it will. Outside, the pier lamp clicks on for the first time since the wedding bells stopped, and the gold loop catches it, bright and unbroken.
