Heartbeat line and heart on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Colour · Photo

A bare foot and ankle show a single-line heartbeat trace with a heart outline on the ankle, and a small animal face sits inside the heart. Small solid hearts sit along the line, and decorative swirling patterns wrap around the ankle at the top and side. The ink is a dark brown-red, the linework is thin and even, and the photo is placed on a white card over a dark red graphic background.

Dear Tom,

The gaffer came up our row this morning with a roll of graph paper under his arm and spread it across the kitchen table as if it were the Sunday racing. It is the trace from the new seismograph at the drift mouth, a black wavering line that leaps in sharp little peaks wherever the ground has shifted in the night. Mam said it looked like a bad hand of cards. Dad said it looked like a pulse, and that the men at the face had started calling it the mountain's heartbeat.

Mab went under the table the minute the paper landed and laid her chin on the edge, nose almost touching the ink. Every time the line jumped, her tail thumped the flagstones. Mr Pryce says a dog knows the ground better than any instrument, and I didn't have the heart to tell him the instrument has been right twice this week while the dog has only been hungry.

On the last sheet there is a quiet stretch, flat as a summer lake, from the Tuesday night Dad was on back shift. Someone had drawn a small pencilled heart beside the peak at the end of it, and inside the heart a tiny face with pointed ears, badly done, which the gaffer swears was his own work. Mab was sniffing at the paper when I rolled it up, and she left a damp print in the corner, right over the heart. I have not wiped it off. It's the nearest thing to a signature we have out here, and I thought you should know.
