Mrs Ada Pell had been sending the same telegram for eleven days, and by the twelfth the clerk at the Porthkerris office had stopped pretending not to read it over the counter. The words never changed: HOLD THE SHIP. NOT YET. She paid in coppers, folded the flimsy into a neat square, and asked whether it would reach the harbour before the tide turned.

Tom Garrow had the key that morning. He tapped the message out slowly, the dots and dashes lifting off the sounder like a pulse he could feel in his wrist, and when he reached the end he stopped. Ada had never finished a sentence in her life, as far as the office could tell. Her messages simply ran out, as if the sea had come up the steps and taken the rest. He lifted his pencil, hovered over the page, and set down a small mark, a full stop that he didn't trust. He changed it to a semicolon, a stroke and a dot, the operators' sign for the line is not closed, keep listening.

The answer came back before noon. The lifeboat had turned for home, the boy in the bow was waving a sodden cap, and the harbour master wanted to know who had been so free with punctuation.

Ada came in the following morning with nothing written down. She laid a threepenny bit on the counter, looked at the wire clock for a while, and said she would take the rest of the sentence now, if he had it.
