Heartbeat line tattoos on two fingers
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands are clasped together, with a fine black heartbeat line tattoo on the finger of each hand. The upper tattoo includes a small heart shape within the line, and the lower one is a simpler zigzag pulse. The image has a warm yellow tint and a soft, close crop focused on the fingers.

Dear Tom,

The drum on the Hollin Fell station has been drawing nothing but a fine, nervous zigzag since Tuesday, and Mr Aske says it is only the quarry blasting over the ridge. I have sat up with it every night since, feeding fresh paper under the stylus and listening to the clock tick the minutes off. Nobody keeps the late shift now that the old instrument man has gone to his daughter's in Carlisle, so the paper is mine to change.
On Thursday, a little after three, the line lifted in one sharp peak, rose again, then settled back into the steady pulse it had always kept. I thought of you out past the Hebrides on the Dunraven with your wireless gone quiet, and I wrote the time in pencil on the margin before I could talk myself out of it. Then I checked the log, as one must, and found no report of anything on the coast at all.
Friday's wire came from Oban. The Dunraven had put back into harbour with a cracked shaft and a deckhand with a broken wrist, and not a soul lost. Mr Aske, when I showed him the strip, said the mark was only the quarry, and perhaps it was. I have kept the sheet anyway, pinned above the kettle where the steam can't reach it.
So I am sending you this one, with its small peak and the steady beat after it, and I have pencilled a tiny heart into the top of the spike, the way you used to draw on my schoolbooks. Keep it somewhere dry. When your own line goes flat on that cracked deck, I want you to be able to look at it and see that it came back up.
Your sister, Maud
