The bunting had gone up crooked, and Denise Harrow stood on a plastic chair in the Ivy Road hall, swearing at a drawing pin while thirty-odd former pupils of Larkfield Primary pretended not to watch. She had found the box in her mother's loft: a sheet of stick-on transfers, a white cat with a red bow repeated in every pose, teal mice, tulips, and stars in yellow and green.

Nobody had mentioned the sheet at the planning meeting. Dougie Pryce, who had been sent to the head's office every Thursday in 1986, wandered over with a paper cup of squash and peeled a star off the backing. "We all had these," he said, pressing it to her wrist. "Ran them up our arms in the dinner queue." The mouse, he said, was the one Carol Fenn had wanted most, and she had been blamed for it when Mrs Abbott found it stuck inside the coat pegs.
Denise laughed, then found she wasn't laughing. She had taken the mouse. She had never said so. Carol sat at the far table, grey-haired, studying a menu she did not need. Denise crossed the room with the transfer on her palm. "I've still got your mouse," she said, and held it out. Carol looked at it for a long while, then took it, licked her thumb, and pressed it to the back of her hand, where it sat between two blue veins like something that had been waiting.
By the time the urn boiled, the bunting had fallen twice, and Carol was showing the little teal mouse to anyone who asked, flexing her hand so its red scarf seemed to wave.
