Hexagon lace tattoos on two forearms

Blackwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two forearms show linked hexagonal panels filled with intricate lace-like patterns of florals, leaves and radiating webs, creating a honeycomb effect across both arms. The work is rendered in dense black linework and dotwork, with fine grey shading giving depth to the motifs. The image is almost entirely black ink on skin, with a tiled floor and a person in a checked shirt and jeans in the background.

Mari had counted the bobbins three times before the bell at the col rang for the post, and still the pattern would not close. Six sides, she kept telling herself, six sides and the web in the middle must spread like a spider's own, every ring answering the one before it.

Her brother Tomas had come up from the valley with a sack of cut thread and a cough that rattled like a loose shutter. The mule drivers on the Hollow Pass paid in salt for lace that would not rot in the wet, so she sewed honeycomb panels for their collars and cuffs. Each cell held a leaf, a bindweed bloom, a rosette of fine rings radiating from a point nobody else could ever find.

Winter shut the pass early that year. Tomas went out to meet the last string of mules in the blue dusk and did not come down. Mari stayed at her cushion through the long nights, the tallow lamp guttering, working the cells faster than her fingers liked, until the thread ran short and she had only grey left for the final rosette.

In April the mules came back with a driver she did not know. He held out his wrist, where one of her cuffs had been stitched on, and said that in the drift the honeycomb had let the light through, one small window after another, and he had followed them down the mountain like a lantern trail. Mari looked at the grey centre she had been ashamed of, then at the blue of the lamp in his palm, and understood that the pattern had closed after all.
