Red mandala tattoo on the elbow
Geometric · Other · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo is a symmetrical mandala with layered red petals radiating from a dark central circle, outlined in heavy black linework. Stippled dotwork shading gives the petals texture and depth, and the design is shown from two angles on the same arm. The red ink dominates, with black and grey used for the outlines and centre.

The tide had left the rock pools full of anemones by the time Ma sent me down with the flour sack, and I found the big red one that only opened when nobody was watching. Its petals fanned out in rings, each ring pricked with tiny dark dots where the water had worn the stone. Grandad said the sea was counting something, and the dots were the tally.

Grandad kept a tin of lamp-black and a bone needle in the dresser, the kind he used on sheep ear-tags and, once, on my cut thumb. On Tuesdays, the only day the ferry came, he sat by the window and pricked dots into the back of an old chart, starting at a dark centre the size of a thumbprint and working outward until the paper bloomed. He never drew a line first. He said lines were for people afraid of running out of island.
The summer the ferry stopped for a month, the island ran short of everything but patience. Mrs Gair's boy came home with a fever and the doctor could not cross. I took the chart and the needle down to the pool and sat beside the anemone while the light went. Each dot I pressed into the blank page I counted aloud, the way he had taught me, and somewhere past three hundred the tide turned and came back in over my boots.
When the boat finally came, the boy was sitting up eating porridge, and the chart was pinned above the dresser with a ring of red wax at its heart. Grandad looked at it for a long time, then pushed the tin across the table to me. Start from the middle, he said. The outside will take care of itself.
