Hallelujah in script lettering
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
The image shows the word hallelujah written in a flowing, hand-lettered calligraphy script in black ink. The strokes vary in thickness, with a fine trailing line extending from the final letters and a looped descender below the letter j. The word sits in the lower right of an otherwise empty white background.

Edwin Pask had painted the parish noticeboard every spring for thirty-one years, and every spring the vicar asked for something new to go on it. This year it was Mrs Lyle's idea. Her son had come home from the mill in Halifax with his lungs gone, and she wanted a word on the board that would make the village look up from the lane, even if nobody was going to church.

Edwin chose the fine sable brush with the cracked ferrule and a pot of black enamel he had kept back from the bridge job. He would not write it in capitals. Capitals were for shop fronts. He let the word run from the lower right corner, leaning into the wind the way his father had taught him, the tail of the last letter trailing off towards the hedge where the wood began. The loop under the j he made twice, because the first attempt looked like a fishhook.
When he stepped back the board looked wrong. The word sat low, crowded into the corner, and the upper half was bare white paint going grey in the rain. Mrs Lyle came down the lane with her hand over her mouth and stood there a long while.
"You've left room," she said.
He told her he had not meant to. But he understood, watching her face, that the space above was for whatever she could not yet say aloud, and he left it empty.
