Hockey trophy and red wing with script quote

Lettering · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a shaded grey hockey trophy overlapping a red winged emblem, framed by black script lettering that reads It's More Than Just A Game. The trophy is rendered with grey tonal shading and the wing has red linework and fill. The composition places the text above and below the central motif on a plain skin background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit nearer the grate, the lot of you, and mind the snow dripping off your boots onto Mrs Pell's good rug. This is the tale of the silver cup that lived on the mill pond at Greywater, back when the lake froze black every January and the whole village came down to watch the lads play.

The cup had a fluted bowl and a stem like a church spire, and it went out on a velvet cushion for whichever side won the season. Above the bench hung a red banner with a winged wheel stitched on it, and the old men swore the wings had been sewn by a widow who never once came to a match. She just liked the look of something that could fly.

Then the mill burned down in the hard winter of the great frost, and the coal ran out in every cottage before Candlemas. Tamsin Brierley, who was eleven and too stubborn to be frightened, took the cup in a flour sack and skated the length of the pond to Lowe Cross, where the pawnbroker kept his shutters down. He turned the cup over in his hands, then unwrapped the banner she'd tucked round it, read the words the captain had painted under the wheel, It's More Than Just A Game, and gave her back the sack. He paid for the coal himself, and he never once asked for the cup back.

So when the thaw came the cup went back on its cushion, and the wings on the banner caught the lamplight like they'd never been in any pawnshop at all. Now, who's for another cup of that stew? It's the same pot, mind, and it's been simmering since the thaw.
