Night mountain landscape inside a leaf

Neo-trad · Calf · Colour · Photo

A leaf-shaped tattoo contains a night scene of rocky mountains, a glowing moon, scattered stars and dark pine trees beside a calm lake. The shading is soft and painted, with bold colour in blues, greens and gold, and the leaf is outlined in red and yellow. The leaf's stem runs down to the bottom of the frame, and part of another dark, greyscale tattoo is visible at the lower edge.

Dear Tomasz,

The lift has been broken since Tuesday, so I climb the fourteen floors with the shopping and count the landings out loud, the way you used to count sheep. Mrs Okafor on eleven says the council will fix it by March. She said the same thing last March, and the March before that, so I have stopped waiting for anybody else to carry my bags.

On Sunday I went up to the roof with a flask of tea. You can see the ring road, the gasometer and a strip of sky that is not the colour of a bruise, if you lean past the wire and don't look down. I took the postcard of Caldwell Fell out of my coat, the one with the lake like a dropped mirror, and held it up to the real sky to compare. The moon was already out, small and pale over the car park, and I swear the clouds above the estate were doing what your mountains do.

I have kept your sycamore leaf in the drawer with the bus passes. You pressed it into the envelope last autumn and it has gone the colour of weak tea, but when I held it up against the dusk tonight the veins became ridges and the gaps between them filled with dark trees. The stem ran down towards my wrist like a path. I stood there until the security light clicked on and made me squint.

Come home for Easter, or don't, but send me another photograph of the lake. I want to see whether the water is really that still, or whether you just stood there long enough to make it so.

Love, Anna
