Hope script in an infinity loop on forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo
The tattoo spells the word hope in a flowing cursive script, with the letters drawn over the lower loops of an infinity symbol. The linework is thin and even in a single teal ink, with no shading. The photo is taken straight on against a tiled floor, with the tattoo centred on the forearm and a metal watch sitting above it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The Brightwater needed her stern repainted before the spring tide, and Dilys Crane had only the one tin of teal left from the lifeboat house. I told her it was the wrong colour for a boat named after her mother, but she said the sea would forgive a little vanity. We sat on upturned creels on the slip with the tin between us, and I thinned the paint with a split stick while she drew the word on a scrap of card first.

She wrote it in a loose hand, the h standing tall as a mast, then ran the letters through a figure of eight so the whole thing carried on like a line paid out over the gunwale. "It never ends, see," she said. "That's the trick of a loop." I asked who had taught her to write like that, and she said the nuns in Pembroke, who had also taught her that a wrong word stays on the slate for ever unless you wipe it with your sleeve.
We worked until the light went orange on the harbour wall. Gulls argued over the fish boxes. Dilys kept stopping to blow on the wet letters, and each time I told her the paint would not dry any faster for being looked at.
When the tide lifted the Brightwater off the slip the next morning, the teal had already dulled a shade in the sun, but the word showed clear from the quay, running along her stern. Dilys stood with paint on her knuckles and read it out loud the way you'd read a tide table, as if it were a promise the sea had yet to keep.
