Two hearts and love script on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows two open heart outlines, one above and to the left of the other, joined by one continuous black line that runs down and forms the cursive word love at the bottom. The linework is thin and even, with no shading or fill. The photograph is taken close up in neutral light, with the design filling most of the frame against pale skin.

The towline came off the Halcyon at Gainsborough with a crack like a pistol, and Nan made me coil the whole length before she would let me near the tiller. Thirty yards of grey hemp, stiff with river silt, that had run from our stern to the bow of the Dorothea for as long as I could remember. Two boats, one line, and neither had ever drifted far enough to feel the other let go.

Grandad had rigged it that way the spring they married, so neither boat could wander without the other feeling the tug. Nan told me this while I flaked the rope out on the cabin roof, her hands working without her eyes. I asked her why she was selling the Dorothea. She didn't answer straight. She pointed instead at a splice near the middle, where the hemp had been joined and rejoined so many times it looked like a knot drawn by a child.
We went down through Torksey with the two hulls nosing close, and for once the line stayed taut all the way. At the bottom gate Nan stood with one hand on the bollard and said the boats had only ever been a pair because Grandad wanted them to be, and the water had never asked for it. Then she handed me the marlinspike. I looped the line around both bollards, drew the two ends together and tied them off in a bowline, so the rope ran one unbroken length from the Halcyon's rail, round the iron, and back again. From the towpath it looked like a single line drawn without lifting the pen.
