Colour tattoo on an arm of the word Hope in black script above a pink and teal ribbon looping through a black heart outline.

Hope script, ribbon and heart on upper arm

Lettering · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows the word Hope in black script lettering beside a black heart outline that is partly filled, with a pink and teal ribbon looping through the heart. The ribbon uses soft blended shading in pink, blue and teal, while the script and heart are bold black linework. The design sits centred on a plain background of smooth skin, with the arm filling most of the frame.

Marjorie had brought the scarf to the reunion in a carrier bag, because she had not yet decided whether it was a gift or an apology. The sports hall at Hollin Park smelled of floor polish and the same squash they had served at the leavers' do, and Denise was already across the room, pretending not to look for her.

They had shared a desk by the radiator in Year Nine, with a rule that whoever cracked first owed the other a custard cream. The inside cover of their shared exercise book had a heart drawn in biro, half coloured in with felt tip, and a ribbon looped through it like a piece of string. Under the heart, Denise had written HOPE in a curly hand, then crossed it out and written it again, bigger, as if she had been told she could never spell it properly.

Denise crossed the hall with two plastic cups of white wine and stopped when she saw the bag. Marjorie unfolded the scarf across their knees. It was long and lumpy, knitted in pink and teal, and the colours ran into each other where she had run out of one ball of wool and joined the next. Denise laughed at the uneven edge and then stopped laughing, and neither of them said the thing about the letter that had never arrived in 1991.

Later, when the DJ had given up on the Macarena, Denise tied one end of the scarf to the radiator under the window and the other end to Marjorie's wrist, and they sat on the sill watching the car park lights flicker on, one by one, until the wool was pulled taut across the glass.
