Black linework flash design of a horned crescent above an arch with radiating V shapes and a horizontal base line, with a handwritten quote beneath it.

Horned arch symbol with quote

Black and grey · Flash

The design shows a symbol built from a bold black arch with a horizontal base line, two curved horn-like shapes at the top, and angled V-shaped strokes rising from the base. Beneath the symbol, three lines of handwritten lettering read "May the magick of this earth flow through my veins from this day until my last". The linework is solid and uniform in black on a white background, with no shading or colour.

Mags, the bore crew finally broke through at Tarrow Hollow on Tuesday, and you were right about the horns. Ferrell swore the arch on the old pump house was a cattle gate, but when we cleared the lichen the two curled shapes sat over the doorway like the crescent on a bell, and the V-strokes ran down into the flagstones as if something had been pouring out of the ground for a very long time.

Inside, the cistern was dry except for a skin of green silt. Dale, who has no patience for anything older than his pension, wanted to pry the lintel out for scrap. I stopped him. There is a line cut beneath the arch in letters so worn that I had to lay my torch flat against the stone to read them: may the magick of this earth flow through my veins. Whoever carved it never put a full stop after last, as though the sentence had been left open on purpose.

Here is the part I can't explain. The water table in the valley dropped forty metres after the Reclamation, and yet when I pressed my palm to the cistern floor it was warm, like a sleeping animal. Dale laughed and said it was the heating coils from the survey rig. I would like to believe him, but I took a sample anyway and labelled it with the arch's shape instead of a grid code, because I didn't know what else to call it.

Come up on the next supply run. Bring the good thermos, not the one with the crack. I want you to see the doorway before the crew sets charges on Monday, and I want someone else to tell me I'm not being foolish.
