Sit down, the lot of you, and mind the gravel, because the mare who walked through Hollin Garden was never one for tidy paths. Her name was Nell. She came in the night after the frost broke, when the gate hung open on its one good hinge and the roses were still grey with cold.

Old Walter Pike found her work in the morning. Four prints sat in the soft bed beside the sundial, each one a black horseshoe ring with a wedge of shadow pressed into its heel. She had walked three times round the dial, neat as a clock hand, then gone out through the hedge gap without kicking a single stone loose. Walter wanted a rope and a lantern. His wife Edith put the kettle on and said, let her be, she's only checking the bones of the place.
So every spring after, the tracks came back in the same order, round the sundial and out through the hedge, and Walter learned to read them. Where the prints were deep, the soil had been kept well. Where they were shallow, somebody had been careless with the compost or cruel to a wren. He mended what she showed him, and the roses came good.
The spring Walter died, his son hoed every bed to bare earth and burned the leaf heaps, thinking it tidier. Nell came anyway. Next morning the gate stood open, and four prints led in and none led out. Some say she's still in there, grazing the lawn at dusk, waiting for someone to put the kettle on.
