A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The customs officer at Hollin Ford had one rule about animals: nothing crossed the river without papers. So when the miller's daughter came down the bank at dusk with a grey cat tucked under one arm and a black dog trotting at her heel, he raised his lantern and reached for his ledger.

"Names?" he asked. "Bramble and Tuck," she said. "They're not on any paper," he said, and she shrugged, explaining that nobody at the mill had ever thought them in need of any. He looked down at the mud where the bank met the water. The cat's prints were small and round, neat as coins. The dog's were larger, with tiny claw marks pricked above each toe, and they ran beside the cat's all the way from the far side as if neither had once been ahead of the other.

He wrote nothing in the ledger. Instead he crouched, pressed his thumb into the clay beside the smallest print, and studied the difference. "Those are not the feet of animals that have been carried," he said. "No," said the girl. "They walked the whole river."

He stamped the page with the crossing mark, closed the book, and stepped aside. Behind her, in the grey light, the prints filled slowly with water, and the bank looked as though nothing had ever crossed it at all.
