Hourglass with blood drip and blue flower
Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
An hourglass sits upright with the words TO GET YOU OFF MY MIND in black capitals across the glass, and a red drip runs down from the top. A blue flower with a yellow centre and red accents sits at the base, and a partial lion or cat tattoo is visible to the right. Bold black outlines and flat areas of red, blue, yellow and brown ink give the piece a classic traditional look, photographed against a dark background.

The glass had run dry twice before Ned Harker remembered to turn it. Forty-one days out of Bristol, the Marigold lay becalmed off the Azores, and the only things moving on her deck were the flies and Admiral, the ship's grey tom, stalking the rope coils as if he owned the sea. Ned had the middle watch, two hours of nothing but the creak of the rudder and the slap of canvas.

Mrs Pell's letter had reached him at Lisbon, tucked inside a chandler's invoice, pressed flat around a sprig of sea thrift gone brown at the edges. He had read it eleven times. She had married the chandler's son in March and hoped he was keeping his boots dry. The last line was the one he carried about like a splinter: Do not write again.
So he had written again, twice, and both letters sat unsent in his oilskin. Eight bells sounded forward. Ned tipped the glass and watched the first grains fall, thinking of the cut the bosun's knife had opened on his wrist that afternoon while he was whittling a peg. He had laughed it off. Now he pressed his handkerchief to the wound and let a bright drop run down the wood.
At the change of watch he stowed the glass in its box and took a clean sheet from the purser's drawer. He wrote a single line across it: To get you off my mind, and the sea is welcome to the rest. Then he folded the paper into a boat, set it on the black water, and watched the tide take it past the bow without a backward look.
