I am a warrior lettering with heart
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
The image shows the phrase I AM A in thin, spaced capital letters above the word warrior in a flowing cursive script, followed by a small outlined heart. The linework is fine and even, with no shading. The design is black on a plain white background, centred with generous space around it.

Dear Col,

The frost got the dahlias again last night, black at every collar, and I stood at the gate with my tea going cold, thinking of Mum's handwriting on the seed packets in the shed. She never wrote much on them, just the name and the date, except for one packet of sweet peas from the year Dad went. On the back, in capitals, she'd written I AM A WARRIOR, and then, in the looping hand she used for birthday cards, the word warrior again underneath, as if she had to say it twice to be believed.
I dug out the box this week because the council wants the plot cleared by March. Under the trowels I found the old sowing tins, rusted at the rims, and a bundle of bean canes tied with string. No letter. I half hoped there'd be one for me, which is daft at fifty-four.
So I sowed the sweet peas on Sunday in her tray, on the windowsill where the light comes in at eleven. Eight have come up already, pale and bent like they're checking whether it's safe. I've tied them to the bamboo behind the water butt, and I've copied her words onto a label, though my capitals look like a bailiff's notice.
Come up at Easter if you can. Bring the boys. They can have the tins to fill with compost, and you can have the tray with the crack in it. Tell me honestly what you think of the peas. I reckon they'll flower in June, and I reckon she'd have something rude to say about my handwriting.
Love, Ruth
PS. The heart at the bottom of my label is mine. I never asked her about that one.
