I love you to the Moon and back lettering

Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A black script quotation reads I love you to the Moon and back, with the capital M of Moon enlarged and swashed. Three small five-pointed stars and a crescent moon sit to the upper right of the lettering. The linework is bold and solid in black ink on pale skin, with no shading or colour, and the design is centred across the upper back.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ruth had the bonnet up and a torch clamped in her teeth when the headlights came over the ridge, two white eyes that did not slow down. The Land Rover had died forty miles short of Calder Wells, and her brother's map was folded wrong, so the blue line of the river ran off the edge of the paper like a sentence cut short.

The sky out here did not bother with dusk. One minute the ridge was a black tooth against the orange, and the next there were stars enough to read by, and a crescent moon tipped on its side above the cattle grid like something dropped. Tom had written on the back of a petrol receipt before he left: Back Sunday. Spare's under the seat. Love you to the moon and back. He had always signed off that way, copying their mother, who had said it through the bedroom door every night until the winter she stopped saying anything through doors at all.

The lorry pulled up beside her with a hiss of brakes. The driver, a broad woman with a grey plait and a dog asleep on the passenger seat, leaned out and looked at the bonnet, then at Ruth, then up. "You've got the moon's attention, love," she said. "Nobody out here needs the lights." Ruth laughed, and it surprised her. The woman towed her to Calder Wells on a chain that rang like a bell the whole way.

At the petrol station Ruth tore a strip from the tow invoice and wrote on the back in biro: Found the road. Ask me again Sunday. She pinned it to the dashboard where Tom's receipt had been, then sat in the dim cab with the engine ticking as it cooled, and through the windscreen she counted three small stars, pale as pins, waiting for her to finish.
