Love me for who I am script on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black script tattoo reads Love me for who I am in a flowing, slanted hand, with a small outlined heart after the final word. The linework is thin and even, and the letters are filled with solid black ink. The skin is photographed in soft light against a plain background, with the lettering running across the middle of the frame.

The ink gave out three days past Valparaíso, so the rest of my letter to Ada went down in pencil, pressed hard enough to dent the pilot card beneath it. The purser sold me a stack of those cards for a shilling each, and I had meant to write her one from every port. So far I had written her the weather, the price of onions in Callao, and nothing at all about the thing I actually wanted to say.

The second mate found me at it during the middle watch. He leaned over the mess table with his lamp, read upside down, and laughed under his breath. "You're not writing a shopping list," he said. I told him it was only a letter. He tapped the card where I had started and then scratched out, a line that ran slantwise across the top in my worst handwriting: Love me for who I am. Beneath it I had drawn a small outlined heart, the only part I had managed to do neatly.
"Then send it as it is," he said. "Pencil and all. A woman can forgive a smudge." I told him she could not forgive being asked to love a man who had gone to sea twice to avoid settling down. He shrugged, said that was nothing a stamp would fix, and went back up the ladder into the wind.
I did not send the card. I folded it into my Bible at the page of Ruth, where it stayed until we raised the Horn, and when I finally took it out the pencil had smeared to a grey ghost. The heart was still clear. I have kept it there since, which is the closest I have come to saying the thing plainly.
