Infinity anchor and roses design
Botanical · Mixed · Flash
The drawing shows a rope-woven infinity symbol with a shaded anchor on the left and a purple rose cluster at each end of the loop. The anchor and rope are rendered in grey pencil-style shading with fine hatching, while the roses have soft purple tints. The script phrase I refuse to sink runs along the right-hand loop on a cream background with faint sparkle overlays.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The boat came in at dawn with its gunwales low and no one aboard but a girl called Maud Alder, who sat in the bow with a coil of wet rope across her knees as if it might still be needed. The keeper of Scarrow Light, Tobias Crane, rowed out to her with his lantern unlit and found her hands were blue but her grip had not loosened. Her father's boat, the Brightwater, had gone down on the Teeth in the night. She told him this the way a person reads a list.

He took her up the iron stairs to the lamp room, where it was warm from the oil and the great lens threw small rainbows across the floor. She unwound the rope and showed him the splice. Her grandmother had braided it years before, when the sea first took her husband, and had worked the line into a loop so that it ran round and back on itself with no end to cut. At each join she had tied a cutting from the wild rose that grew over the chapel wall, so the knots would have something soft to hold. The anchor was still bent to one end. Maud had kept the line when the others cut theirs to save their own skins, and she had not let go of it through the whole night.
Tobias did not know what to say, so he took a stub of chalk from the shelf and wrote on the slate beside the logbook. Maud read it aloud, slowly, the way children read in the village school. I refuse to sink. She nodded as if the words were a rope she could check for weakness.
That evening the light went round as it always did, and the water below it went black and then silver. Maud sat by the window with the loop across her lap, and the roses on the splice caught the lamp's glow and looked, for a moment, nearly alive.
