The rain has found the gap between your tarpaulin and the gutter again, and it drips onto the box of star charts you swore you would move under the trestle an hour ago. Nobody is buying. The market on Kirkgate has emptied into the pubs, and the only customer left is a woman in a yellow mac who has been turning the same brass telescope over for ten minutes, squinting at its lens as if it owes her money.

"Does it work?" she asks. You tell her it works if the sky does, a line your father used to say, and she laughs in a way that makes you look up properly. Then she opens her notebook on the wet trestle. Two teardrops meet at a point, their outlines inked heavy, and inside them she has coloured a galaxy in pencil, purple bleeding into pink, bright blue pooling in the left loop as if something has just switched on. "Where's the middle?" she says. "There isn't one," you say. "That's the point of it." You are not sure you believe yourself.

She pays in coppers from the bottom of her bag, eleven pence short, and you let it go. Before she leaves she tears out the page and presses it flat on the charts, then pushes the lid down against the rain. When you lift it again, the ink has run in the damp and the two loops have softened into one another, purple and blue spreading through the paper, so that the pages look like the same night seen twice. You leave the telescope where it is and go home with the charts under your arm.
