Infinity heart key on the top of a foot

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A thin black key sits on the top of a foot, its bow formed by an infinity loop that curls into a heart shape. A second, small solid black heart tattoo sits on the ankle of another person to the left of the frame. The photograph is taken at close range against grass, with the toes and a ring with clear stones visible at the bottom.

The brass blank had already split twice on the bench, so Ada filed the third one slowly, the way her father had taught her, listening for the moment the teeth caught. Outside the shop the rain had stopped and the gutters were still running into the harbour. Mr Pellow from the chandlery had asked for a key that opened nothing. He had been firm about that, and he had paid in advance.

The hard part was the bow. A normal key ends in a ring, but he wanted a loop that folded back through itself, endless as a figure eight, and then curled at the top into a heart. Ada bent it cold, annealed it, bent it again. On the third evening she held it up to the lamp and saw that the two lobes of the heart met exactly where the loop crossed, so that no part of the metal was ever the beginning or the end.

Pellow collected it on Saturday, turning it over in his fingers like a coin. He told her his wife had kept a tin box with a painted heart on the lid, the kind sold at fairs, and that the lock had rusted shut the winter their son went to sea. They had never forced it. They had waited for a key that looked right, and neither of them could draw one from memory.

He didn't ask her to make it open anything, and she didn't offer. He thanked her, tucked the key into his waistcoat, and walked up the hill past the church with one hand flat over the pocket. Ada swept the filings into a dish and left the bench lamp burning. Some things, her father used to say, are made to be carried rather than used.
