Infinity heart with Mom and Daughter script
Fine line · Black and grey · Photo
The image is a split comparison of two tattoos on skin. Each shows a single continuous black line forming an infinity symbol with a heart in the left loop, with cursive script beside it reading Mom in the upper panel and Daughter in the lower panel. The linework is thin and even with no shading, and the ink is black against lightly coloured skin, with a plain background.

The cord had to be laid in one unbroken length, Ada said, or it was no good to anyone. She had walked the ropewalk at Staithes since before the tide turned, pacing backwards while her daughter Win fed the strands through the hooks, and the sun had slid behind the cliffs before either of them thought to stop.

Win was sailing on the Margaret Jane at first light for the herring grounds off Norway, her first trip as a hand instead of a cook's girl. Ada had spun a figure of eight into the end of the cord, a loop that crossed itself at the middle, and tied a small knot of tarred yarn where the two sides met. "Your heart goes in the left," she said, "and the rest goes round and comes back to me."
The Margaret Jane came home in October with her holds half full and a deckhand's grudge against the weather. Win stood on the quay and worked the knot loose with her teeth, then held up the cord. Ada's heart had frayed at one edge, but the line had not parted. It ran out from the loop, swept under the crossing and came back the way it had gone, and nobody on the harbour wall could have said where the start ended.
Ada took one end and wound it twice around her wrist. "Now you keep the other side," she said. Win laughed and coiled the rest into her oilskin pocket, the way you would keep a letter that was still being written.
