Matching sisters infinity tattoos
Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo
The image shows a pair of matching infinity symbols, each with the word sisters written in flowing script through the centre loop and small curled ends at both sides. The top photo uses blue, teal and purple ink, while the lower photo uses pink and red, and both have thin, even linework. The skin tone is plain and the tattoos fill the centre of each frame against a soft background.

You find the ribbon in the biscuit tin under the stairs, the narrow green one Mum used to tie up parcels, and you spend twenty minutes at the kitchen table trying to coax it into a figure eight that will lie flat. Nell calls from the hallway that the car is outside and the florist has rung twice. You fold the loop into your handbag anyway, because it is the only thing you have ever made that looked the way you meant it to.

The church hall smells of cold radiators and sweet peas. Nell is pinning her veil with a hairgrip held between her teeth, and she does not look up when you set the ribbon down beside the cake knife. "You're not doing a speech," she says. "I'm doing one sentence," you tell her. The ribbon has a teal run on one side and a plum run on the other, the colours you argued over in a haberdasher's in Ipswich when you were nine and she was seven. Neither of you ever agreed which colour was yours.
Later, when Tom has finished his vows and his voice has gone wobbly on the last word, you stand with a glass of cheap fizz and say the one sentence. You tell the room that a loop has no end and no beginning, so nobody ever has to be first to let go. Nell laughs and wipes her eye with a knuckle. When the speeches are done she slides the ribbon out from under the place cards and tucks it into her bouquet, where it sits among the white roses, one small endless shape that nobody else in the room will think to look at twice.
