Two stacked photos of a fine line tattoo on a shoulder, showing script quotes above an infinity symbol woven through a red outlined heart.

Infinity heart with quote script on shoulder

Fine line · Shoulder · Mixed · Photo

The image shows two photographs of the same shoulder tattoo, with handwritten script above an infinity symbol that overlaps a heart outlined in red. The first photo reads For her I'd risk it all, and the second reads Because of her I will not Fall, both in thin, uniform black linework. The black script and infinity symbol dominate, with the heart outline adding a small amount of red on a warm, softly lit background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Out past the last lamp on the Sable Reach, where the cable ran from Gannet Tower to the salt works, there lived a rope-mender called Orla Venn. Every spring the wind came off the grey water and found the loose strands, and every spring someone had to walk the line and splice it. The old folk said the cable had been strung by people who were gone before the sea moved in. Nobody on the Reach had ever asked them what they meant by it.

Her husband, Tam, was the one who went out on the wire when the weather allowed. He was light and quick, and he would stand on the cable with the drop below him and sing to keep his feet honest. Orla waited at the tower with the spool and the tallow. Each time he set out she told him she would risk it all to keep him, and he said that was foolish, because the wire was his work and not hers. She said nothing kept a person upright like someone holding the other end.

One autumn a squall came up faster than the gulls. Tam was halfway across when the cable began to sing, a high note that meant a strand was going. Orla did not wait for the horn. She took the line in both hands and paid it out slowly, hand over hand, the way you bring in a kite, and she felt every shiver of him through the hemp until he reached the far post. Her palms were raw for a month. Tam kept the splice with a loop of red thread she had tied through it, and when people asked why it was red, he said it was so he could find the way home in fog.

On still evenings they walked the line together, and the red loop caught the lamplight where the two ends met and went round again.
