Infinity loop with lettered quote design
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
A hand-drawn design on plain paper shows an infinity symbol formed by two looping lines, with lettering running along it. The words "we were", "AND IN THAT MOMENT I SWEAR" and "infinite" use mixed handwritten script and spaced capitals, drawn in fine black pencil or ink. The composition is flat and centred, with the text following the curves of the loop and no shading or colour.

From it you could see the pier, the grey slab of the sea, and the bench where Thomas Greave sat every afternoon with a notebook he never opened.

She had meant to be sensible about him. Sensible was the word her mother used, usually while buttoning a coat over some disappointment. But on the last Thursday of the month he came up the front path with the wind pulling at his hat and said, without any preamble, that the ferry to Lymouth was cancelled and that he had decided he would rather be stranded with her than not, and Edith laughed so hard she had to sit down on the hall step.
They walked the prom until the lamps came on. He talked about a brother in Canada and a boat he had never finished. She talked about nothing she could later remember, only that the tide was out so far the sand looked like paper someone had written on and then smoothed flat. At the shelter by the lifeboat house he took a pencil from his coat, pressed her hand palm up, and wrote a line across her wrist, looping back on itself like a figure eight lying down.
"What's that say?" she asked.
He was quiet a moment. "Something I'll have to keep," he said, and kept his eyes on the water.
The ferry ran on Saturday. Edith saw the ink go faint by Monday and was glad, and then sorry, and then glad again. Years later, in a flat above a bakery in another town, she still ran her thumb across that loop without looking, the way some people touch a coin in a pocket.
