Infinity loop with silhouettes and Forever young
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
An infinity loop forms the main frame, with dark silhouetted figures inside and along its curves, including a figure in flight at upper right and a figure in a long dress at centre. The words Forever young sit in black script beneath the loop. The ink is solid black with fine outlines and no colour, shown on bare skin with the edge of a dark bra strap at the top of the frame.

Tam Greave lost his shadow the winter the Maudlin pit flooded, and he did not notice until the lamp was lit at the back door and there was nothing on the flags beside him but the grey of the step. His mother said it would come back in the morning like a dog that had gone to the tip for scraps. It did not come back. It went up over the wash-house roof with the smoke, past the chapel, and out over the spoil heaps where the lights of the pit-head turned slowly.

Nell Ashworth, who took in sewing on Crook Lane, heard about it from the boys at the pit gate. She had a long grey dress she had cut down from her aunt's wedding gown, and she said she would go after it. Nobody thought she could. But she sat up three nights with a needle and black thread, and on the third night the shadow came down the chimney and stood in the middle of her kitchen, holding out one hand, the way a boy does when he means to be taken home.
The trouble was that it wanted to fly. Every time she tried to pin it to him, it lifted off the floor and tugged towards the open window, and the younger Greave children, asleep in a row under the bedclothes, began to drift up off their mattresses as if they weighed nothing. Nell understood then that the shadow had been living with people who never grew up, and that it wanted to go back to them. So she stitched a thread from the boy's own cuff to the hem of her dress, and told him a thread has two ends and two ways home.
They say the shadow settled back onto Tam at the bottom of the shaft on a Tuesday, sewn fast at the heel. He grew into a man with a lamp and a pick and went down the pit every day for forty years. On the morning he died, his grandchildren found a boy's shadow lying across the bed, small and quick, with one arm flung out toward the window as though somebody had just called it in to supper.
