Infinity symbol with heart and family script on a foot
Fine line · Other · Mixed · Photo
A black infinity symbol loops across the top of a foot, with the word family written in black cursive script inside the right-hand loop. A thin red heart outline sits within the left loop, where the infinity line meets it. The linework is clean and even, with solid black ink and a single red outline, shown against pale skin and a light background.

Sit closer, the fire only warms the one side of you, and I'll not raise my voice over this wind. You want to know how the Hadley girls came to wear a loop on their skin? Then listen. Old Tom Hadley drove sheep over Blackstone Fell every October for forty years, and every October the snow came down behind him and shut the pass.

One winter he got caught on the far side with his youngest, little Nell, who was seven and cross about it. They went round in circles for two days: the same stone wall, the same broken gate, the same crow sitting on the same post. Nell kept count. Each time they passed the gate she scratched a mark on the frozen rail with a nail from her coat pocket, and by the third morning that rail was grey with them.
Tom saw the marks and laughed until he coughed. 'We're going nowhere,' he said, 'but that's a road shaped like a figure eight, child, and a figure eight always brings you round to where you started.' He drew it for her in the snow with his crook, one sideways eight, and where the two loops crossed he put a small heart, because his wife had pressed one into his bread that morning with a stick of jam.
The thaw came on the fourth day. They followed the loop down to the lower road and found the lamp burning in the kitchen window, exactly where they had left it. Nell kept the nail. She says the heart is the important part, and I have never once told her she is wrong.
